Activity for March:  Its time to learn all about learning how to make a scarf with Rose.  The supplies you will need are:

  • Six (6) strips of fabric 6″ wide (x WOF) (this can be one colour or several, but each strip will be 6″ wide x WOF. Batiks work best as they don’t fray as much). Rose suggested we use bright colours for spring. You need 6 strips to make the scarf. These can be from one piece of fabric (1 yard / 36″ long), that you cut into 6″ strips.  The intention isn’t to have pieced strips making up a 6″ wide strip. It won’t be soft and flowy if you do that
  •  Coordinating thread
  • Sewing machine. Bring yours or not. We could share machines. Rose has offered to sew if we want her too.
  • Sharp scissors / rotary cutter / cutting mat

Don’t forget your ‘ugly fabric’ blocks, house blocks, heart blocks and other misc. blocks for our donation/comfort quilts.

See you there! – Pat

As part of Sun Peaks Quilters celebration of Black History Month, each quilter took on the task of creating a block that represented a specific direction to send slaves north towards freedom.  The blocks were then sewn into a top by Pat and quilted by Pearl.  The finished quilt was presented to the Sun Peaks Scouts and Beavers during their meeting in November 2014.  The quilt will be used to raise funds for the troop and their activities.  The nine blocks in the quilt included Flying Geese, Bow Tie, Shoofly/Curn Dash, Monkey Wrench/Snails Tail, Log Cabin, Drunkard’s Path, Northern Star, Dresden Plate and a Sailboat.Scouts with Railroad Quilt Nov 2014

We also took the opportunity to teach the scouts how to sew on regular buttons, shank buttons and their badges.  This simple task will give them a life long skill.SP Scouts 2

The Sun Peaks Quilters are all looking forward to teaching them how to make a simple quilt as part of their next project to earn badges.

In recognition of the grant given to Sun Peaks Quilters in hosting Gathering of the Guilds held on May 10, 2014, Sun Peaks Quilters provided a ‘Comfort Quilt’ made from the ‘snow ball blocks’ donated by the various guilds.  Mayor Al Raine accepted the quilt on behalf of the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality.   In turn, the Municipality will donate the quilt which will be used to raise funds for another group that provides services to the community in Sun Peaks.Comfort Quilt for Mayor Al Raine (3)Pictured with Mayor Al Raine are members Joanne and Pat
